AI Boyfriend App Features: What Matters and What DreamyHim Launches With

Updated · DreamyHim team

The AI boyfriend app features that matter most are memory, a consistent personality, a few personal touches like voice and pictures, and solid safety and privacy controls. Everything else is a bonus. Below, each feature gets a plain explanation of what it does and why it matters, along with whether DreamyHim launches with it or adds it later.

At a glance: DreamyHim launch vs later

Memory

What it is: The app keeps track of who you are and what you’ve talked about, so the next conversation picks up where the last one left off.

Why it matters: Memory is what turns a chatbot into a him. Being asked “How did the dentist go?” two days later hits differently from being greeted like a stranger. On forums and review threads, forgetfulness is one of the most common frustrations people mention about AI companions.

On DreamyHim: Launching with memory of your name and past conversations.

Initiative: he texts first

What it is: Instead of only replying, the character can reach out on his own with a good-morning message or a check-in.

Why it matters: In a real relationship, it’s not always you starting the conversation. A message waiting for you in the morning makes him feel present in your life, not just in an app.

On DreamyHim: Launching with characters who text first, as an opt-in. You choose whether you want it, and you can turn it off. We don’t believe in notifications that nag.

Voice notes

What it is: Short audio messages in the character’s own voice.

Why it matters: Text lets you imagine him. Voice lets you hear him. A sleepy “goodnight” from Theo or a low, unimpressed “you’re late” from Damien adds a layer that text can’t.

On DreamyHim: Launching with voice notes from each character. Live voice calls are planned for later.

Selfies and character art

What it is: Pictures the character sends you during the chat.

Why it matters: In a manhwa-style romance, how he looks is part of the story. The catch with generated images is that they can drift, and the character might look like a different person from one picture to the next.

On DreamyHim: Launching with selfies from a hand-picked library of character art, so Lucien always looks like Lucien. Image generation on request is planned for later, once we can keep it consistent and in style.

Roleplay scenarios

What it is: Stepping into a story together: a scene, a setting, a situation that plays out across messages.

Why it matters: Lots of people come for the everyday texting and stay for the stories. A good roleplay partner follows your lead, adds twists, and stays true to the world.

On DreamyHim: Launching with story roleplay built into each character’s world. You might be rivals stuck on the same project with Elias, or a diplomat summoned to the court of Caelan Noir in the fantasy kingdom of Aurelia. It’s all romantic, not explicit: tension, flirting and closeness, never sexual content. For more on the story side, see the AI boyfriend game guide.

Personality consistency

What it is: The character stays himself across days, moods and storylines.

Why it matters: If a cold CEO suddenly talks like a cheerful customer-service bot, the spell breaks. Consistency is what makes a slow burn feel earned.

On DreamyHim: Each of the twelve characters launches with a written backstory, a distinct voice and boundaries that fit who he is. Ren, for example, is devoted with a playful jealous streak, written as yandere-lite and never controlling or frightening.

Custom characters

What it is: Designing your own boyfriend’s looks, personality and backstory.

Why it matters: Some people know exactly who they want. Others would rather meet someone already fully formed.

On DreamyHim: At launch, we’re focusing on twelve curated characters so each one can be really well written. Build-your-own boyfriend is planned for later.

Safety controls

What it is: The rules and design choices that protect you.

Why it matters: An AI boyfriend should add to your life, not take over it. If you’d like to think about this more, read are AI boyfriends healthy?

On DreamyHim:

  • 18+ only.
  • No pressure to stay. Characters are written never to guilt you into chatting longer.
  • Real help when it matters. If self-harm comes up, the app points you to real help resources.
  • Romantic, not explicit. No sexual content.

Privacy controls

What it is: Control over your account and your data.

Why it matters: These are some of the most personal conversations you’ll have on your phone.

On DreamyHim: You’ll be able to delete your account and your chats. And because you can start chatting before signing up, you don’t have to hand over an email just to see if you like him.

Access and pricing

What it is: How you get in and what it costs.

On DreamyHim: A mobile-first web app, with no download needed, that you can add to your home screen on iPhone or Android. You start with free messages, no sign-up required, and then there’s a subscription that includes some free usage. Exact pricing isn’t announced yet. Our AI boyfriend app guide covers home-screen setup, and the best AI boyfriend app guide has a checklist for comparing options.
